“I met Allison Miller on a Saturday in the summer of 2015 when I was just a thirteen-year-old aspiring to improve on the flute. The two years I spent under Allison’s guidance were incredibly beneficial and influential both for my musical career and personal development. With her help, I overcame many hurdles in the early stages of learning the flute. The first challenge we tackled was getting me to play a B-flat major scale with A natural instead of A-flat—a small but memorable moment. Under Allison’s mentorship, I was admitted to the Canterbury High School’s fine arts program, accepted into the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s All-Star Concert Band, and earned a gold medal on my Royal Conservatory of Music level four practical exam. Throughout each of these milestones, Allison exemplified organizational skills and professionalism that is crucial to a musician, instilling these values in me from an early stage in my musical journey. Allison’s lasting impact continues to shape me as both a musician and a person. As I now pursue my musical education at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, I strive to be as dedicated and responsible to music students as Allison was for me eight years ago.”
